Defense/Goalie

Aidan Fox, St. John's Shrewsbury Sr. - Fox led the Pioneer defense to its first CMass championship in 3 years.

Reid Leveillee, Longmeadow Jr. - A great cover defenseman, Leveillee usually covered the opposition's best attackman on his way to being named All-American.  He is currently uncommitted.

Brennan Pierce, Algonquin Sr. - Pierce is a large, physical presence at close defense who also showed great footwork this season.  He will play at Washington College next spring.
(LSM) Mike Halloran, Algonquin Sr. - Halloran stepped in following Tim Hanlon to give Algonquin two straight 1st-team LSM's.
(Goalie) Giles Ober, Algonquin Sr. - An All-American, Ober was stellar again all year for the T'Hawks.  He will play at Babson next spring.

Coach of the Year

Ryan Liebel, Longmeadow - In his first year at Longmeadow, Coach Liebel led the Lancers to an undefeated season and their first state championship since 2008.  And with only 3 senior contributors, the future is bright.

From The Longmeadow News

Leveillee’s determination to keep the offense from the net is well-documented. Smiling, he described his defense strategy pretty simply: “I try to make sure my guy scores zero goals.”
However, he gave voice to something both stated numerous times—that they were part of a larger group, in their eyes, of equal talent. “But I also want to make sure everyone else’s guy scores zero goals."

Leveillee, Gurzenski receive All-American Honors, Liebel named Coach of the Year

US Lacrosse recently announced their annual award recipients from Western Massachusetts. High school varsity lacrosse coaches from across the region gather at the end of the regular season to vote on these awards.

Reid Leveillee named “All-American”. The junior defenseman was one of only four players to receive this honor from Western Massachusetts and is the only junior in the group. Reid had an outstanding year as a close defender, anchoring one of the best defenses in the state. Reid is the 39th player from Longmeadow High School to receive this honor since the program started in 1970.

Noah Gurzenski named “Academic All-American”. The senior goalie was one of only two players selected this year to receive this honor from Western Massachusetts. Players are chosen for their outstanding performance in the classroom, as well as their contributions on the athletic field. Noah has always been a leader in both. His efforts in cage during the Western Mass semi-finals vs. Amherst, was one of the finest performances ever by a Longmeadow goalie. Ryan Liebel named “Coach of the Year”. It was the obvious choice that first year Longmeadow Coach Ryan Liebel receive the “Coach of the Year” award after he led the Lancers to a perfect 25-0 season and the programs 19th State Championship in boys lacrosse. He set high goals for the team and demanded much from his players. His ability to teach, motivate and inspire these young men lead to them exceeding everyone’s expectations. Congratulations to all !!!

Seven Western Massachusetts boys lacrosse players selected to inaugural BostonLax.net All-American Game

, June 17, 2013 3:53 p.m.

Seven Western Massachusetts athletes joined others from around the state on Monday in an inaugural showcase of the best boys lacrosse players in the Commonwealth.

At the same time, they helped two worthy charitable causes.

Amherst midfielder Kieran Presley, Westfield midfielder Matt Lacroix and Minnechaug goalie Sam Wheaton suited up for Team Boston Strong in the BostonLax.net All-American Game at Harvard University in Cambridge.

They were opposed by Team Wounded Warrior, which had midfielders Drew Kelleher and Keegan Dudeck and defenseman Reid Leveillee – all of Division II state champion Longmeadow – and South Hadley attackman Evan Marcus.

The game is a fundraiser for the One Fund Boston, which benefits those affected by the April 15 Boston Marathon bombings, and the Wounded Warrior Project.

All but Dudeck and Kelleher were named All-Americans by U.S. Lacrosse, the sport’s governing body. Every All-American from Massachusetts, including Independent School League (preps), received an invitation, while other standouts such as Dudeck and Kelleher were added to fill out the rosters.

D2 State Semis: Lancers Streak Toward Perfection

06/13/2013, 2:00am EDT
By Joe Parello

WORCESTER - Longmeadow continued its magical 2013 season Wednesday, defeating St. John's (Shrewsbury), 15-6, at Foley Stadium Wednesday to remain unbeaten and advance to the Division II state championship game.

"It 100 percent was not an individual effort," first-year Longmeadow coach Ryan Liebel said. "It was a great team effort on defense, and if it wasn't for our team defense, they would've been able to stick us."

...Even more impressive for Longmeadow was its defense. Junior goalie Matthew Draymore was solid between the pipes, and the Lancer poles contained the explosive Pioneer trio of Burdick, Josh Freilich and junior Drew Smiley. Burdick recorded a hat trick and Freilich scored a pair, but the Navy committed Smiley was held off the board.
"They have great athletes, fast defensemen" Freilich said. "They have fast guys that can keep up and throw at your hands, always harassing you, so it's tough."

LANCERS FINISH REGULAR SEASON UNDEFEATED 20 - 0 !!

From Longmeadowlax.com :

LONGMEADOW 10 / WESTFIELD  5                  5/23/13
Tonight the boys showed up to play. Defensively they played great, playing the body, communicating and being aggressive. It was nice to see them finishing their slides. Offensively the passing game was crisp which led to many excellent looks and shots. The Lancers played their up-tempo game style which suits them well. Johnny Falcone played a nice physical game when he had his opportunities and of course Drew Kelleher’s success at face-offs was huge.

Goals: Kevin Barry (3), Keegan Dudeck (3), Will Lukas (2), Myles Smith (1), Matt DeMarche (1).

Asst: Zach Lukas (3), Keegan Dudeck (1), Drew Kelleher (1), Matt DeMarche (1), Max Chipouras (1).

Saves: Matt Draymore (12), Noah Gurzenski (3).

Two At Home This Week...

LONGMEADOW 17 / MINNECHAUG  7                 5/18/13

Longmeadow continues to roll. Heading down the home stretch the Lancers continue winning games handily. What has changed over the past couple of weeks? The Lancers now come out strong and continue throughout the game. This game was over at halftime with the Lancers up 10-2. Wilbraham had no answer for the Lancers offensive today, whether from the midfielders or attackmen, shots were plentiful. Back from his thumb injury, Noah Gruzenski played well at goal, making some nice saves. Lancers improve their record to 18-0 with South Hadley coming to town on Tuesday.

Goals: Zach Lukas (5), Drew Kelleher (4), Kevin Barry (4), Matt DeMarche (1), Eric Barsalou (1), Keegan Dudeck (1), Josh Goldberg (1).

Assists: Will Lukas (4), Drew Kelleher (2), Kevin Barry (1), Zach Lukas (1), Eric Barsalou (1), Max Stukalin (1).

Saves: Matt Draymore (6), Noah Gruzenski (3

LANCER LAX '13, The State's Only Undefeated Team, Moves To 17-0 with Win Over St. John's Shrewsbury.

16-0 !!

Logmeadowhighlax.com

LONGMEADOW 16  MEDFIELD  1                                  5/12/13

What had been talked about as one of the best games of the season was anything but.
Longmeadow got it going early and often with no game or fight back from Medfield. Whatever the reason for Medfield's lack of play, traveling, tiredness, out played, or just a bad game, in my opinion the Lancers beat them 9 times out of 10 on any given day. Senior attackman Kevin Barry was on fire today scoring 5 goals and causing many turnovers in the offensive end. Defensively it was Leveillee, Ryan, Cotnoir and Draymore shutting the door on the Medfield offense. The Lancers improve to 16-0 with today’s win and play a high ranked St. John’s of Shrewsberry team on Wednesday.

Goals: Kevin Barry (5), Drew Kelleher (2), Max Chiporous (2), Keegan Dudeck (2), Zach Lukas (1), Matt DeMarche (1), Will Lukas (1), Max Stukalin (1), Eric Barsalou (1).

Asst: Zach Lukas (3), Will Lukas (3).

Bostonlax.com Defensemen Rankings

Mid-Season Defensemen Rankings

05/14/2013, 10:00am EDT
By Bishop

1st Team

Nick Brozowski, Concord-Carlisle - Possesses incredible hand-eye coordination, which allows him to be a force on ground balls and creating turnovers.
Chris Calnan, Nobles - By a slim margin, the best Nobles defenseman in my eyes.  Exceptional athlete who loves hitting people.
Pat Healy, St. Sebastian's - Another physically developed pole with a little mean streak on the field, Healy led Seb's to their upset of Governor's this past weekend.

Reid Leveillee, Longmeadow - The only returning defenseman for the Lancers, Leveillee has not only dominated individually but helped bring along a young defensive corps for the state's only undefeated team.

Eli Morrissey, Governor's - Has consistently dominated at LSM, as well as being a great face-off guy.
John Sexton, Lincoln-Sudbury - Although he hasn't been as omnipresent as last year, Sexton can still be found everywhere on the field at times for the Warriors, playing close, running a wing, taking the occasional faceoff, and even appearing on man-up again against Duxbury.

Valley Wheel rankings, a look ahead, Longmeadow-South Hadley game notes

04/30/2013, 9:45pm EDT
By Jake Nelson

..."Longmeadow is soaring and looks like one of the top teams in the state. Their last two wins come in impressive fashion with a lopsided 13-3 result against state power Algonquin and a convincing 10-4 verdict over Jake Cupak and the Westfield Bombers on Monday afternoon. Zach Lukas and Keegan Dudeck lead the Lancer's balanced offensive attack with 25 points apiece and Reid Leveillee continues to show why he is an elite defender. The Lancers haven't been truly tested since a 12-11 overtime win against Pinkerton Academy (NH) on April 13th. Tomorrow evening's contest against South Hadley will have a lot to say about the remainder of the regular season for Longmeadow. Games against Medfield, St. Johns Shrewsbury, and a rematch with a presumably healthy Amherst-Pelham squad still remain."...

Attack/D-
"Balance is the key with this squad. Kevin Barry leads the attack and is very good around the cage, often using his size to come from x. Nothing the Lancers do offensively, from an individual standpoint, is insanely impressive. That's not a knock on their ability, its a testament to their coaching and their ability to understand and run a system. It's methodical and insanely hard to defend. Reid Leveillee has been nothing short of outstanding in his junior campaign and Jack Ryan has been a nice compliment. Matt Draymore mans the cage for the Lancers and hasn't been wildly impressive, however, he hasn't had to do a whole lot with a very, very impressive defense in front of him."

"Longmeadow has been led by their defense all season and Wednesday was certainly no exception. Reid Leveillee and Jack Reid continue to spearhead what is rapidly become a very, very intimidating unit to face. After todays game they are givinig up 4.3 goals per game. Yes, you did read that stat correctly. Leveillee has been nothing short of dominant and has an impressively complete skill set for a kid his age. All around, the Lancer defense has shown a high intellect, coupled with good size, athletecism, and the ability to clear the ball very effectively. Matt Draymore made 8 stops in the game and looked good throughout."

LANCER LAX '13 GOES 8-0 WITH WINS OVER MINNECHAUG AND BOSTON COLLEGE HS !

LONGMEADOW 8 / BC High 6 4/20/13

Today’s game and early morning practice demonstrates this years team commitment to the lacrosse program and to first year head coach Ryan Liebel. Waking up for a 6am practice, practice for 2 hours, go home shower, get on bus for 9am, travel 2 hours to South Boston and play a solid game of lacrosse. Kudos to the boys. Leading the scoring today were midfielders Matt DeMarche (3) and Keegan Dudeck (3). After giving up 2 easy first period wake-up goals the entire team played an excellent defensive game. Lancers improve their record to 8-0.

Goals: Keegan Dudeck (3), Matt DeMarche (3), Drew Kelleher (1), Myles Smith (1).

Assists: Myles Smith (1), Will Lukas (1), Keegan Dudeck (1).

Saves: Draymore (10)

6 - 0 !

LONGMEADOW 7 / NORTHAMPTON 4 4/16/13

The Lancers were lucky today with a 7-4 victory over a stingy Northampton defense. Today’s game was deadlocked for 3 quarters and stayed that way until midway through the 4th quarter. A man up goal along with two fast breaks scores during the 4th quarter was enough to secure the victory. The Lancers defense played well again today lead by Reid Leveillee, Jack Ryan, Dan Cotnoir and Rocco Casaceli. Let’s consider today’s game as an off day for the Lancer offense and give the defense their due credit for today’s victory. The 6-0 Lancers now play the Falcons of Minnechaug Thursday evening at home.

Goals: Zach Lukas (3), Kevin Barry (2), Keegan Dudeck (1), Myles Smith (1).

Assists: Drew Kelleher (2), Zach Lukas (1), Kevin Barry (1), Max Chipouras (1)

Saves: Draymore (8)

Players looking to make a splash in the hotly contested league

D - Reid Leveillee, Longmeadow, JR:
The only returning starter from a close defensive unit that graduated All-American Connor Samuelson (Springfield). The imposing Leveillee (6'2, 190) is also a highly skilled and athletic player. He may be best known for his ability to cause turnovers and push the ball upfield in the same sequence. Leveillee heads a defensive unit that was clipped in the Western Mass semis by eventual champion Minnechaug a season ago.

LANCERS GO 2-0 TOPPING AMHERST 14-6

Longmeadow defense disarms Amherst shooters

04/06/2013, 4:15pm EDT
By Jake Nelson BOSTONLAX.NET
Leveillee and Ryan lead the Lancers

"It's been said that the best offense is a good defense. Such was the case for the Longmeadow Lancers this morning as they used a suffocating defensive effort to dismantle the Amherst Hurricanes at Longmeadow high school. Up 5-1 after the first, Amherst was never really able to gain traction in the game. Junior defenders Reid Leveillee and Jack Ryan led the way for the Lancers as they held Kieran Presley and the talented Hurricane offense to six goals in the contest"

"Led by the efforts of Leveillee and Ryan, the Lancer defense was sensational all game long. Leveillee in particular showed a complete skill set that has a good bit of potential to be successful at the college level. On multiple occasions Leveillee directly caused a turnover on his man, picked the ball up and sprinted it over the mid-line to assure a Longmeadow possession. Running with the ball as often and as successfully as he did was no small task against a very, very athletic midfield from Amherst."
